What is a Ninja?

Ninja History and Techniques

Ninjas were known as spies and assassins with special skills who thrived from the Heian period through the Sengoku period, and even into the Edo period. They were responsible for covert missions such as information gathering, assassination, and sabotage. The most famous ninja regions are Iga (present-day Mie Prefecture) and Kōga (present-day Shiga Prefecture). Ninjas employed a unique martial art known as ninjutsu and various tools known as ninja tools (like shurikens and kunai) in their operations.

Abroad

Ninja Popularity Overseas

Ninjas, with their unique skill set, attire, and mysterious way of life, are incredibly popular abroad. Their characters are featured in various media, including movies, TV shows, comics, and games. Particularly, the manga "NARUTO" has continuously attracted a new generation of fans.

Costume

Ninja Attire and Kunoichi

The distinctive costume worn by ninjas is designed to aid in covert operations at night or in the dark. It is believed that their black or dark-colored attire was suitable for inconspicuous movement in dark places. However, there's a debate among scholars about whether ninjas always wore black. Some suggest they often disguised themselves wearing common peasant clothes. Female ninjas, known as kunoichi, gathered information and carried out assassinations differently from their male counterparts.
